Note that the amplitude of first arrivals becomes weak at offsets larger than \(\sim 20\) km at many eastern sites, such as S80 and S90, which is generally called the shadow zone and often observed in this part of the Pacific plate (e.g., Fujie et al. 2016, 2018). Such shadow zones suggest a very small or negative vertical velocity gradient within the oceanic crust (i.e., velocity reversal within the oceanic crust) (e.g., Zelt 1999).
