Bathymetric and seafloor age map around the study area. a The bathymetry of the western Pacific near the Mariana Trench. The red box shows the study area, to the southeast of Minamitorishima (Marcus) Island. Bathymetric data are from ETOPO1 (NOAA National Geophysical Data Center; http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/). b The seafloor age map of same area as in (a). This study area is within a 160–170 Ma region called the Jurassic Quiet Zone (JQZ) (Tivey et al. 2006). The absolute motion of the Pacific Plate in this area is from Gripp and Gordon (1990). The seafloor age data are from Müller et al. (2008). c A detailed bathymetric map of the study area. The onboard multibeam data are from the YK10-05 cruise by JAMSTEC. The petit-spot knoll explored in this study, surveyed by the 6K#1466 dive, is displayed in a white box; that surveyed by dives 6K#1203 and 6K#1206 was reported by Hirano et al. (2019)
