Energy flux has been estimated using the depth-dependent version of the Aiki, Greatbatch, and Claus Level-2 scheme, as given by (7b). Panels (a, b) include wind-forced wave energy input (solid contours for positive values, dotted contours for negative values; contour interval = 0.002 W/m2) following (12). All quantities are from “Year 20” of the model experiments associated with first six fundamental baroclinic modes. In the left-hand panels, theoretical phase speeds calculated for both Kelvin waves and equatorial long Rossby waves are shown as solid blue lines
