Variances (cm2) in the sea level along the coast of Japan denoted by colored circles, from the coastal tide gauge observation data (1997–2005) by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), which is the daily mean data, excluding tidal variation. The calculation of variance was based on a daily anomaly from the daily climatology (and so the effect of the seasonal cycle was excluded). The seven points denoted by the arrows are used in Fig. 14
