  1. aFor the dry experiments, a confining pressure of 150 MPa was applied by using Ar gas; for the wet experiments, a confining pressure of 200 MPa was applied, with pore-water pressure of 50 MPa
  2. bThe errors of coefficients of friction μ at the yield point (at displacement of 1.5 mm in this study) and (a – b) were determined by the fitting errors
  3. cThe differential stress on the gouge layer was measured by the internal load cell (I), but for cases where no internal load cell data were available, we used the corrected data of the external load cell (O), see main text for details of this correction
