Schematic illustration of the sampling procedure for geochemical analyses of the modern and fossil shells. The red and blue arrows indicate sampling intervals of 1 and 2 mm, respectively. Shells were cut along the maximum growth line and then along a line perpendicular to the maximum growth axis. Thin sections along the maximum growth axis were examined in CL images. SEM observations were carried out on the cross-section along the line perpendicular to the maximum growth axis. Individual shells were divided into three intervals (intervals 1–3) based on the shell morphology
