Number of large SEP events as a function of time from September 1995 to the end of April 2014. The black, red, and blue plots denote cycles 22, 23, and 24, respectively. The right-point arrow within the cycle-23 interval corresponds to the first 66 months of cycle 23 (May 1996 to November 2001) used for comparing with the current length of cycle 24 (December 2008 to April 2014).
