Schematic illustrations of the autotrophic assimilation of inorganic substrates. Diagrams (a) and (b) indicate assimilation schemes for CO2 and nitrate, respectively. Diagram (c) is a scheme of the normal two-step model, and (d) is a more rigorous scheme based on Michaelis-Menten kinetics (Wada and Hattori 1978). The terms c, k, and ε indicate the concentration, rate constant, and isotopic fractionation, respectively.
