Metabolic energies available from each (A) aerobic and (B) anaerobic reactions shown in Table 1 . Calculations were performed for H2 oxidation, H2S oxidation, methanotrophy, and Fe2+ oxidation (aerobic reactions) and hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis, hydrogenotrophic SO4 reduction, anoxic methanotrophy, and anaerobic Fe3+ reduction (anaerobic reactions) at the 89 hydrothermal vent sites in MOR-B, MOR-U, AMA-M, ABA-F, SED-MOR, and SED-ABA settings. Shaded areas represent hydrothermal vents issuing highly vapor-rich (<100 mmol/kg Cl) fluids.
