The mean values presented in each row have been ranked (separately for temperature, precipitation and streamflow) and coloured from the smallest (white) to the largest (dark green), thereby highlighting even the smallest differences. Polar climates are under-represented in the investigated precipitation and river flow datasets (see Fig. S2 in the supplementary material); thus, no statistical summaries are available for them in b and c. The corresponding boxplots are presented in Fig. 6
