The mean values presented in each column have been ranked and coloured from the smallest (white) to the largest (dark green), thereby highlighting even the smallest differences. The grey areas (i.e. areas lacking statistical summaries) correspond to under-represented climate classes in the investigated global datasets (see Fig. S1 in the supplementary material). The corresponding boxplots are presented in Figs. 3 and 4
